Why Your Contact Page Isn’t Converting (And How to Fix It)

You’ve done the hard work. Your brand looks beautiful. Your website is elegant, easy to navigate, and showcases your best work (of course it does – it’s a StyleCloud website!). You’re even getting solid traffic. So why aren’t the enquiries rolling in?
Most photographers don’t realise it, but the #1 reason you’re not getting enquiries?
Your form might not be working.
Seriously. SMTP issues, misconfigured email settings, and outdated form plugins can cause messages to vanish into the void without you ever knowing they were sent. That’s why every StyleCloud subscription includes our free Contact Form Saver plugin, which stores every submission safely in your dashboard. It’s your insurance policy against lost leads.
If your tech is working but enquiries are still low, it’s time to take a closer look at how your contact page is designed, because even tiny tweaks can make a huge difference.
1. The Hidden Tech Problem: Your Form Isn’t Delivering
Misconfigured forms are one of the most common (and costly) issues we see. Many photographers don’t know that WordPress doesn’t handle email reliably out of the box. If your SMTP settings aren’t configured, your form may say “message sent” — but the message never arrives in your inbox.
The Big Risks:
- Messages get flagged as spam
- Emails silently fail
- Form entries are never saved, so there’s no backup
The Fix:
- Use an SMTP plugin to connect your site to your email provider (we recommend WP Mail SMTP)
- Use the Contact Form Saver plugin (free with every StyleCloud subscription) so every enquiry is saved to your WordPress database and easily accessible in your WordPress dashboard, even if the email fails.
- Test your form monthly and after any updates to plugins or themes
2. Common Mistakes Photographers Make with Their Contact Form Questions
Even if your tech is solid, your design and copy might be causing unnecessary friction. Here’s how to spot the hidden conversion killers.
Mistake #1: Asking About Budget Too Soon
It’s natural to want to qualify leads quickly. But at this early stage, most clients don’t yet understand the value of what you offer and they’re just testing the waters. Asking theme to name their budget can scare people off before you’ve had a chance to connect.
Instead:
- Make sure you at least have a starting price easily visible on your website
- Focus on starting a conversation, not screening people out
Mistake #2: Getting Too Personal Too Fast
Yes, photography is personal. But asking intimate questions like “How did they propose?” or “What do you love most about each other?” too early can feel invasive, especially when you’re still a stranger on the internet.
Instead:
- Keep initial questions light and practical or open-ended. eg. “Tell me about your big day”.
- Build trust and connection after they hit submit
Mistake #3: Asking for Non-Essential Info
Do you really need to know the fiancé’s name or job title before you reply? Probably not.
What you do need:
- Their name
- Their email address
- What kind of shoot they’re enquiring about
- A date or location, if relevant
And even a date-picker can be a deal breaker if they haven’t actually set a date. Not having a way to enter simple info can be enough to make them bounce off and go elsewhere.
Everything else can wait until the discovery call.
Mistake #4: Asking Difficult or Open-Ended Questions
Questions like “What are your hopes and dreams for your session?” might sound thoughtful, but they can overwhelm a tired, time-poor user who just wants to check your availability.
Tip: Avoid questions that require long, thought-out answers. The more friction, the fewer submissions.
Mistake #5: Including Too Many Fields
You might be tempted to ask everything up front, but it’s the digital equivalent of handing someone a clipboard with 20 questions. It’s overwhelming.
Best practice: 5–7 fields max. Enough to start a meaningful conversation without scaring people off.
What a High-Converting Contact Page Looks Like
Here’s what we recommend for our StyleCloud customers — and it works.
✅ A Warm Welcome
Include a short headline like: “I’d love to hear from you” or “Let’s make something beautiful together” to break the ice.
✅ A Simple, Reassuring Introduction
Let them know what to expect: when you’ll reply, how they’ll hear from you, and that it’s okay to just say hi.
✅ A Short, Smart Form
5–7 fields. Include dropdowns where possible to make answering effortless.
✅ A Photo of You
People want to connect with people. Add a friendly headshot to make your brand feel human and relatable.
✅ A Testimonial or Two
A great quote from a past client can help reassure a nervous new one. Bonus points if it mentions how easy it was to get in touch.
✅ An Email Address As a Backup
Forms break. Emails go astray. Always include your email as an alternative.
Don’t Skip the Thank You Page. It’s More Important Than You Think
When someone hits “Submit” on your contact form, where do they land? If it’s just a generic confirmation message like “Thanks, we’ll be in touch” you’re failing to build excitement and trust at the very moment they crave it most. Luckily for you, StyleCloud contains a range of beautiful Thank You page layouts, ready for you to drop straight into your site.

A dedicated Contact Thank You page does two powerful things:
1. Deepens the relationship
Your thank you page is prime real estate. It’s the perfect moment to:
- Reassure them of what happens next (when you’ll respond, how)
- Showcase a personal message or short video from you
- Share a featured gallery, client testimonial, or helpful blog post
- Encourage them to follow you on Instagram or join your email list
This is your chance to make a warm, professional impression that builds trust before you’ve even spoken.
2. Lets you measure real conversions
Without a separate thank you page, it’s hard to track how many visitors actually submit your form. But when you redirect to a unique URL (e.g. /thank-you-contact), you can:
- Set up a conversion goal in Google Analytics
- Track contact form submissions from ads or landing pages
- Optimise and improve over time based on real data
💡 Reminder: If you’re using StyleCloud, our contact blocks are already set up with redirection options built in, so all you have to do is create a beautiful Thank You page and link it up.

In Summary
If your contact page isn’t converting, don’t panic. Most of the time, it’s a combination of small things, and they’re all fixable.
Start with the basics: make sure your form works. Then look at how you can reduce friction, build trust, and make getting in touch feel easy, warm, and welcoming.
Your dream clients are already visiting your site. Let’s make sure they know exactly how to reach you.
