You’ve got your domain name. Maybe you’ve even chosen your StyleCloud template. Things are starting to feel real – and exciting.
Then someone mentions hosting, and suddenly the momentum stalls. What even is it – and do you need it? Is it the same as your domain? And why does everyone seem to have a different opinion about where to get it?
Don’t worry. Web hosting for photographers doesn’t need to be complicated, and by the end of this post you’ll know exactly what it is, how it connects to your domain, and how StyleCloud Hosting makes the whole thing a lot simpler than it used to be.

Domain vs Hosting – What’s The Difference?
Think of it this way: your domain name is your address, and your web hosting is the building that sits at that address.
Your domain (e.g. yourname.com) is the URL people type into their browser to find you. You register it through a domain registrar – companies like GoDaddy or 123-Reg – and it’s yours to keep as long as you renew it each year.
Your web hosting is where your actual website lives. All the files, images, pages and content that make up your site are stored on a server. When someone visits your domain, their browser goes to that server and loads your website.
The two are entirely separate services, and you don’t have to buy them from the same place. In fact there are often good reasons not to.

Why Web Hosting For Photographers Is A Little Different
Most generic hosting is built for general websites. Photography websites have specific demands – large image files, portfolio galleries, fast load times, and a user experience that needs to hold up under the weight of high-resolution content.
That’s why choosing hosting that’s optimised for photography makes a real difference. A slower, overloaded server won’t just frustrate your visitors – it will actively hurt your SEO rankings and reduce the chances of a potential client sticking around long enough to enquire.

Where Does StyleCloud Hosting Come In?
StyleCloud Hosting is managed WordPress hosting built specifically for photographers. Rather than sorting out generic hosting and then figuring out WordPress yourself, everything is configured and optimised for you from the start – one login, one support team and zero setup stress.
Your StyleCloud website runs on WordPress using the Kadence framework, and our hosting is built with that in mind. Speed, security, backups and site monitoring are all handled, so you can focus on your photography and your clients rather than your server settings.
You don’t have to use StyleCloud Hosting – it works perfectly well with your own hosting if you prefer. But for photographers who’d rather skip the tech and keep everything in one place, it’s a straightforward option built with you in mind.

How StyleCloud Hosting Works
Getting started is a simple three-step process:
1. Choose your package and create your login. After checkout, your WordPress environment is automatically prepared – no manual setup required.
2. Migrate or build your site. If you’re moving an existing WordPress site, you can use the pre-installed Migrate Guru plugin to bring everything across, including your content, plugins and SEO settings. If you’re starting fresh – or coming from Squarespace, Flothemes, Showit or Wix – you can import your content and build using StyleCloud templates and blocks.
3. Connect your domain when you’re ready. You build on a temporary URL until you’re happy with the site, then connect your domain to go live. Your hosting, security and performance settings are already taken care of.

Connecting Your Domain To Your StyleCloud Hosting
When you’re ready to launch, you’ll need to point your domain name to your StyleCloud server. There are two ways to do this – the CNAME record method, and the Nameserver method. For StyleCloud, we use the CNAME record method.
The CNAME Record Method: What StyleCloud Uses
The CNAME record is a DNS setting inside your domain registrar account. It’s the signpost that tells the internet where to send people when they type in your domain.
To connect your domain to StyleCloud Hosting, you create a CNAME record in your domain registrar’s DNS settings and enter the address provided to you after setup. That address will connect your domain directly to your StyleCloud server.
This method is clean and precise. It connects your domain to your hosting without disrupting anything else – which is especially useful if you’re managing your email separately (more on that below).
In short: your domain stays where it is, you just redirect it to point at StyleCloud’s servers. We have full guidance on the process, and our team is on hand if you get stuck.
The Nameserver Method: Why We Don’t Use It
The alternative is to change your domain’s nameservers entirely, pointing them to your hosting company so that everything – your website, email, and DNS settings – is managed in one place.
While this can feel tidy, it’s not what we recommend for StyleCloud. The nameserver method transfers full control of your DNS to your host, which makes it harder to manage email independently – and as we explain below, keeping email separate is the better long-term approach.

What About Email? A Note On Email Hosting
This is one of the most common questions when photographers are setting up web hosting for the first time, so it’s worth being clear: StyleCloud Hosting focuses on running your website. Email hosting is a separate service, and we’d recommend keeping it that way.
Most photographers already have an existing email setup – and in most cases, you’ll simply retain that. If you’re setting up professional email for the first time, we recommend services like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, both of which give you a professional email address at your own domain (e.g. hello@yourname.com) without being tied to your web host.
Reasons to keep email hosting and web hosting separate:
- Reliability. If anything ever happened with your web hosting, your email would be completely unaffected, and vice versa.
- Flexibility. You can choose the email provider that suits you best, without being limited to what your web host offers.
- Deliverability. Dedicated email providers are optimised for inbox delivery in a way that bundled hosting email often isn’t.
Because StyleCloud uses the CNAME record method to connect your domain, your existing email setup stays completely untouched. If you’re unsure about your specific situation, our team are happy to chat it through.

Choosing A Domain Registrar: What To Look For
If you haven’t registered your domain yet, or you’re thinking of moving it, here’s what to keep in mind:
Auto-renewal. Make sure this is switched on. Letting a domain lapse accidentally can mean losing it altogether.
Privacy protection. When you register a domain, your name and contact details become part of a public registry. Most registrars offer WHOIS privacy (sometimes free, sometimes a small annual fee) to keep your details private.
Simplicity. You only need a domain from your registrar – not a bundled website builder, email package or security certificate. Keep it simple and source those services separately from providers who specialise in them.
Decent, straightforward registrars include GoDaddy and 123-Reg.
Web Hosting For Photographers – The Short Version
✔ Your domain is your web address. Your hosting is where your website lives. They’re separate things.
✔ Photography websites have specific needs – image-heavy, fast-loading, conversion-focused – so hosting that’s optimised for that makes a real difference.
✔ StyleCloud Hosting is managed WordPress hosting built for photographers – one login, one team, no setup stress.
✔ Getting started is straightforward: choose a package, build your site on a temporary URL, then connect your domain when you’re ready to go live.
✔ StyleCloud uses the CNAME record method to connect your domain – simple, clean and non-disruptive.
✔ Email hosting is separate – you’ll most likely keep your existing setup, or we’d suggest Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for professional email at your own domain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Web Hosting For Photographers
Below are a few common questions photographers often ask web hosting and domains.
No. Your domain stays exactly where it is – with whichever registrar you bought it from. All you need to do is create a CNAME record in your domain settings to point to your StyleCloud server. It’s a small change that takes a few minutes, and we have full guidance to walk you through it.
DNS changes don’t take effect instantly – they need to propagate across the internet, which typically takes anywhere from a few hours up to 48 hours. The good news is that with StyleCloud Hosting you build your site on a temporary URL first, so you can have everything ready before you make the switch. There’s no pressure to connect your domain until you’re happy with how the site looks.
Nothing, as long as your email is hosted separately, which it almost certainly is. The CNAME record only affects where your website traffic is directed. Your email settings (MX records) are separate DNS entries and won’t be touched when you update your CNAME record. If you’re unsure about your specific setup, it’s always worth checking with our team before making any changes.
Yes. If you’re moving from a WordPress site, the pre-installed Migrate Guru plugin makes it straightforward to bring your content, plugins and SEO settings across. If you’re coming from Squarespace, Showit, Flothemes or Wix, you can import much of your page and blog content and then rebuild using StyleCloud templates and blocks. We have platform-specific guides for each, and our team can advise on the best approach for your situation.
Yes. StyleCloud templates and the StyleCloud licence work independently of our hosting. If you’re happy with your current host, you can absolutely continue using them. StyleCloud Hosting is there for photographers who want to simplify their setup and keep everything – their website, support, and hosting – under one roof. There’s no obligation to switch.
